University Grants Commission

University is the statutory body of the government of India. It is established by the act of University Grants Commission Act of 1956.

It has some mandates like providing funds and determining the standards of higher educational institutions.

The UGC mandates include

  1. Promoting and Coordinating university education – It will promote the University education
  2. It will determine the standard of Education, Teacher, Examination, and Researches have done in particular universities.
  3. UGC -Net frame is the standard regulation for Education in India
  4. UGC -NET also monitors the development in the fields of collegiate and university education.
  5. It serves as a vital link between Central and state governments and of course institutes of Higher learning.
  6. Sometimes it will also advise to central government and state government on the measures necessary for university education.

University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (NET)

Basically, it is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Assistant Professors’, ‘Junior Research Fellowship, and Assistant professors in Indian Universities and colleges.

The selection of the candidates for the following fellowship will be made through the ministry of social welfare and empowerment and the different ministry for the minority categories is the ministry of minorities( Religious) affairs –

  • National Fellowship for Scheduled casts (NFSC)
  • National Fellowship for other backward classes (NFOBC)
  • Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students (MANF ) – But right now it has been discontinued for the financial year 2022-2023 onwards.

Candidates who are aspiring for the above fellowship can apply for the UGC-NET.

UGC NET Examination

Mode of examination

There is only one mode for the exam of UGC-NET which is a computer-based test (CBT).

The pattern of Examination of UGC NET

There will be two objective-type question papers and there will no gap between the two papers.

The patterns of UGC NET are as follows –

Medium of Question Paper For UGC NET

  • The medium of the question shall be in Hindi & English Language only
  • Candidates must choose the option of medium for the exam carefully because there is no provision to change the medium of the exam.
  • If the candidate chose the Hindi language the question paper will be in a bilingual language, For English and there will be only one language which is English.
  • If the question paper has some mistakes then the English version will be final and the UGC decision will be final.

Marking Scheme For UGC

The aspirants who are aspiring to pass this exam must know about the marking scheme of UGC NET.

The marking scheme is as follows-

  • Each question carries two marks
  • For each correct response, the candidate will get two (02) marks
  • There is no negative marking for incorrect responses in UGC -NET question Paper
  • The candidate will not get any marks for unattempted/unanswered/ mark for review questions.
  • To answer, Candidate must choose one correct option
  • If the question is found with multiple answers, The candidate whose chosen correct answer will be given benefit.
  • In the question paper, If any question is found incorrect credit will be given to those students who attempted this question. The reason could be a human or technical error

Eligibility Criteria For UGC NET

General / Un-reserved or EWS Students who have secured at least 55% marks in Masters’s degree or Equivalent degree from a recognized university by UGC ( Available on the UGC website )

Candidates who are pursuing master’s degrees and appearing in the final exam or waiting for results can apply.

The candidate belonging to the third gender will also get the benefit of Fee, and age as they are available to the SC/ST/PWD categories.

Ph.D. Holder student will receive 5% marks relaxation for UGC -NET

Candidates are advised to appear in post-graduation subjects only, If the candidate’s subject doesn’t cover then the candidate can appear in a related subject.

Candidate must provide accurate information, NTA does not verify your information but in the process of selection found ineligible your candidature will be canceled. Candidates must ensure their eligibility themselves. Do not send any document or any printout to NTA for proving tour candidature.

Instruction For UGC NET

The selection of candidates will depend on the performance of the two papers. Candidate must ensure before applying for what he is applying like an Assistant professor or Junior Research Fellowship.

If a candidate gets JRF then they can select one like JRF or Assistant Professor. If candidates want to continue the research they can if they don’t then they can continue with research (JRF)

But if a candidate get selection in Assistant professor they can can continue only in Assistant professor Not in JRF.

Eligibility For Assistant Professors

NET/SET/SLET will be the minimum criteria for the recruitment of assistant professors in state universities/colleges or central universities.

Candidates who have cleared SET prior to 2002. It is not necessary for the aspirants who cleared SET prior to 2002.

It is necessary to be an Assistant Professor, So everyone should clear NET those who want to pursue their career as assistant professors.

Age Limit restriction for UGC NET

There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professors.

For JRF the age must not be more than 30 years, There is a relaxation in age maximum of 5 years according to terms & Conditions. Please check the official website for that.

Reservation in UGC NET

There is a reservation available to UGC NET aspirants according to this-

  • 15% Seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) but for those who fall under the Central list category of SC )
  • 7.5% Seats for Scheduled Tribes (ST)
  • 27 % Seats for OBC NCL as per the government of India
  • 10 % Seats For EWS categories
  • 05% of the seats in the above-mentioned categories for Persons with Disabilities
  • (PwD) with 40% or more disability shall be in the horizontal reservation. Besides this for more information read – The rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016).
