In a significant step towards harnessing renewable energy and reducing power shortage, Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad K Sangma Chief Minister Solar Mission launched, a pioneering initiative aimed at ushering in a new era of green progress for the northeastern hill state.

The state government has allocated an annual investment of Rs 100 crore to start the solar mission.
Additionally, plans are underway to attract a variety of funding partners, including corporate social responsibility, carbon credits and contributions from international organizations sharing a vision of sustainable energy.
This progressive expansion plan will be supported by net metering, allowing high-efficiency hybrid solar units to contribute energy to local and national grids.
The subsidy structure is designed to encourage a wider beneficiary group, with individual household households benefitting from 70% subsidy and schools, hospitals, hotels, and commercial institutions eligible for 50% subsidy.
Apart from the Solar Mission, Chief Minister Sangma unveiled plans to set up LED assembling units across the state, provide employment opportunities for youth and push for self-reliance. Simultaneously, discussions are on with battery manufacturers to set up battery production and maintenance facilities within Meghalaya.
These initiatives contribute to the state’s overall goal of achieving energy sustainability and promoting local economic development.
Much of Meghalaya’s current power generation is hydro-based, with river water being the primary use for power generation.
However, variations in weather can impact hydropower production, leading to shortfalls during droughts.
The installed hydro power capacity in the state is 378.7 MW, with a peak demand of over 500 MW.
The Chief Minister’s Solar Mission aims to bridge this gap and create a more secure and sustainable energy ecosystem.
